Do not go up the rough road unless you have a BLM permit. There is no sign indicating this until you arrive. The creek looks very inviting along the way but all access is privately owned and the residents are quite protective of their land.
Aravaipa Canyon is one of the most beautiful spots in the western states. My family homesteaded 160 acres there in the 1800s, where my great-grandfather grew over 1,000 peach trees, apple, pear, apricot and quince trees, and 1/2 acre of beautiful blackberries.
My experiences in the canyon have always been amazing and fantastic and I have not minded paying for the permits to protect this amazing area. But the news fees are highway robbery (and that is why only a single star). This is exactly what happens when you privatize services that the government used to do just fine. Now, a single person wanting to go in for a day hike will have to pay $15 for that privilege, with most of that cost ($10) going to pay for the service of getting a permit. It is unfair that big groups pay the same $10 fee as a single person. Especially considering that big groups often have a greater impact on the resource than small groups. And it is just plain wrong that management of the wilderness gets less of the permit fee than the business providing the permit. Well, it is one way to keep down visitation to our wilderness resources and it makes it harder for those with low incomes to enjoy those resources.
Go about 20 miles south, and you will come to Kielberg Canyon, Creek, Peak, Dam and Tank named for my great-grandfather Emil Kielberg, Sr. This is another beautiful canyon. Want more information?
